Every morning when Jan Oberholzer wakes up, normally around 03:00 and, before he even puts on the kettle, he reaches for his phone to log onto the Eskom generation dashboard.
He must know what the day holds for the country's power stations. Usually, it's not good news. But he is online as the power stations start ramping up for morning peak - a precarious exercise, when a lot can go wrong in a short period of time.
The dashboard provides an hourly update on the more than 80 power generation units scattered around the country – how much power its producing, if its online or broken down - and it gives a forecast for several hours ahead.
