The State Security Agency (SSA), which is tasked with protecting the country from domestic and foreign threats, has been hurtling into the future without direction as two critical positions have remained without leaders.
News24 can reveal that the agency has been without heads for its domestic and foreign intelligence branches for the past 18 months. The foreign branch's director, Robert McBride, was suspended in July 2021, while the former head of the domestic branch, advocate Mahlodi Muofhe, resigned in August 2021. McBride remains suspended on full pay.
The foreign branch is responsible for collecting and analysing data about potential threats emanating from outside South Africa's borders, while the domestic branch investigates hazards and perils within the country.
