Finance minister Enoch Godongwana, who claims Eskom’s problems are "inexplicable", has failed to intervene in a tax dispute between the power utility and the South African Revenue Service that could have secured Eskom an additional R5.9 billion to bolster its record-breaking diesel expenditure.
News24 understands that Eskom needs an additional R7.5 billion for diesel by the end of the week to last until the end of the financial year in March, meaning the SARS rebate would be a lifeline to the country’s economy.
But the tax service has remained adamant throughout appeals processes since 2020 that Eskom's documentation is not sufficient.
