Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe says controversial Turkish company Karpowership works well in African and South American countries and South Africa does not have the luxury to say it is too expensive.
In a wide-ranging interview this week, Mantashe appeared to be promoting the Karpowership deal yet again, despite the sustained criticism of the deal that could cost the country as much as R220 billion over 20 years.
"I think we must have the leeway to buy electricity from the neighbouring countries who will offer," he said, when asked what he would say to South Africans who asked him what needed to be done to stop load shedding.
