Lobola problems for Yizo Yizo star

Controversial Yizo Yizo star Dumisani "Chester" Dlamini (40) has given up his wedding plans, apparently because he cannot pay the R23 000 lobola demanded by the bride's family.

Dlamini stunned his fans recently when he announced he would be marrying his chartered accountant lover Girlie Nhlengethwa (22) at the end of this year.

Nhlengethwa is as young as Dlamini's first-born, Kwazi.

The wedding plans hit a snag when Nhlengethwa's family from Newcastle in Northern KwaZulu-Natal demanded a R23 000 lobola.

Several attempts by Dlamini to negotiate a lower lobola with the bride's family were apparently unsuccessful.

This week Dlamini refused to tell City Press why he was indefinitely postponing his wedding plans.

But about six weeks ago he told City Press he was pinning his hopes on abakhongi (groom's messengers) to negotiate a lobola cut for him.

"I have decided to postpone the wedding and concentrate on my music career. I am now very busy. I have no time to talk about marriage," he said.

Nhlengethwa's elder sister, Khaphayi, said the family stands firm on its R23 000 lobola. But she indicated the matter was open for discussion with Dlamini's family.

The Nhlengethwa family came under intense criticism from their neighbours when City Press first published the story that they were demanding a R23 000 lobola for their daughter.

Anonymous calls received by the Nhlengethwa family included insults that the family was trying to enrich itself with Dlamini's money.

"The community also chastised the family for allowing their daughter to marry Dlamini, saying Dlamini was too old as their daughter was only 22," said a source.

Dlamini, who divorced his American wife, Deborah Foryer, who has two children from him, is now involved in kwaito music projects and advertising commercials.

Dlamini met Foryer in 1986 when he was part of the Sarafina cast touring the United States.

However, the marriage was frustrated by the bride's wealthy family.

Dlamini said the bride's family did not want him because they considered him to be a "poor African". His children's names are Daluthando and Nomalanga, both in their teens.

Dlamini had also tried to marry former Sarafina star Nandi Ndlovu.

But she was snatched up by singer Lebo M while Dlamini was planning the marriage.
