Mfuleni centre opens

The opening of the Mfuleni Community Day Centre on Tuesday and aimed at alleviating service delivery constraints ic was met with great applause from those in attendance.

The temporary facility, dubbed the “Plug and Play”, is expected to be utilised until the permanent Community Day Care Centre- for which construction will start in the 2018/2019 financial year-is finished.

Hendrina Wilschut, the Facility Manager at the centre, said one of their challenges was increasing patient numbers, poor working conditions and space constraints.

“These conditions lead to poor patient flow and negative patient experience which impacts negatively on quality service delivery.
Patients requiring rehabilitation services will be serviced at Mfuleni CDC instead of Eerste River Hospital.

Planning for the permanent facility is scheduled to start in the 2018/19 financial year.

“The present facility comprises of modular components that can be assembled in different configurations and thus can be moved, refitted and reused.

The establishment of the centre was in response to public, staff and management raising service delivery challenges.

The establishment of the healthcare facility is aligned with the department’s vision to provide high quality healthcare and service delivery,”

She also said the centre serves patients coming from Mfuleni, Wesbank, Bardale, Driftsands and Malibu.

The centre offers preventative and rehabilitative primary health care services, woman’s health, including ante-natal and post-natal care, child health, school health services including Wellness Mobile bus services, TB, HIV/AIDS, STI, Mental Health, health promotion, dietetics, rehabilitation, outreach audiology and speech occupational therapy and physiotherapy, oral health services.

Disability grant assessments, eye screening and optometry services, pharmacy, including chronic medicine collection, and administration and staff training facilities.

Mbombo advised officials at the centre to go all out in helping patients.

“The Western Cape has an increased population as compared to previous years.

This centre will decrease the workload here. Bring your heart to work.

As employers we need to acknowledge our staff members, because they work under pressure. Do not bring politics here in this centre.

You must help anyone regardless of the T-shirt that he or she is wearing. Take care of the centre.

Do not burn it, because if your do, you will get another one in 2050.

Remember that we have to go give services to other areas as well,” Mbombo said.

Violet Mnyimba, 67, a resident, said the centre came at the right time when the community needed it the most.

“It will be a great help. It is a blessing for the community,” Mnyimba said.

Mnyimba was the chairperson for a first health committee that was established in the area in 1986 and she served in it until few years ago.

She said there was only a mobile van at the time which provided health services.

“People had to walk as far as Somerset West to get access to health facilities.

We fought for the clinic in the area,” she added.

The R25 million building was commissioned in April 2014 as a fast-track project to alleviate severe service delivery constraints at Mfuleni clinic.
