Dear Government Institution (MICT SETA)
It is my great concern that you spend so much, and you work tirelessly to improve lives of South African graduates but those who are being given the positions to allocate or to oversee internship programmes by hiring and giving stipends to graduates seems to be abusing those powers.
I am not writing this piece as a less privileged black South African, but I am writing this piece as an educated young black qualified journalist who once practised investigative journalism that triggered or sharpened my instinct of knowing if something is wrong.
Please allow me to address this issue by first asking questions. Specifically how much does an intern get as a stipend if he/she is part of the internship programmes under MICT SETA?, according to my knowledge the MICT SETA deals with IT, Graphic Design, Marketing and PR graduates, then, is it in the constitution that a graduate can be given a chance without considering their qualification, like sometimes you find a Marketing graduate doing Sales/ Graphics Design end up being forced to do IT in the company they are placed in.. isn’t that an exploitation of one’s skills?
During my investigation and research, more than 20 interns were not happy, due to insufficient skills and training they get because they are being placed at small companies which are owned by individuals who are trying to start a business for themselves.
These graduate complained about having no mentors, all the skills they apply in projects given to them it all basic knowledge for the whole year, are those objectives of MICT SETA?. Regarding sites visits, how many times does SETA visits those graduate to hear their concerns per year of the internship? after receiving those concerns what steps does the institution take?.
I am very sad and disappointed by the way graduate are being treated under the internship programme from MICT SETA in the Midrand branch. Some of the interns they are being kicked out from these small companies even if the internship contract is not over, where do you want those graduate to go? Yet they the company still receive money from SETA to pay those graduates, which eventual means they are taking it for themselves and in this country that is considered as corruption.
I will not sit down and watch, I am not blaming MICT SETA as a whole but I am blaming the lower structure of the organisation that oversee and supervise these internship programmes. In applications, when companies are applying to get interns, what criteria you look at? because it seems like they give these to their friends and they end up benefiting, that is judged by the lack of interventions between the person who supposed to hear concerns of graduates from SITA.
There was one time when graduates had complained about the particular company, and what happened was the very same SETA person who supposed to take all those challenges back to his office and find solutions, he just called the manager of the company and exposed graduates who have concerns which really didn’t turn out to be a healthy relationship between the employer and employees.
On what basis does MICT SETA grant a person an opportunity to host graduates?, because I have seen one person having more than 50 graduates then placing them in companies which he/she don’t even care if those graduates get training they need or not, because they only thing that matters nowadays is money, money and money.
Should we watch people abuse tax payer’s money like this; I will never do that because I believe in justice and freedom of expression. This piece might even fall in the wrong hands, but I care less, this is just a part of what this issue is about and it doesn’t stop here.
I know the government won’t have time for me due to political situations at hand now, but I hope that one day this will stop and when that happens I will be the one coming back and write about it.
I plead to all graduates to never allow companies to exploit their skills, to mention another case there is a Graphic Designer graduate who was sent to work at McDonald, yep McDonald to finish the internship because apparently the company is retrenching.
Where is MICT SETA supervisor in such cases, he is not where to be found and no1 is even coming from the institution’s side, it has been more than 3 months now according to the graduates.
It hard, it though, and it painful to hear the way people who spend years in school are being treated, like uneducated individuals who are of no use.
