Was #DayZero a lie? If so, does that even matter?

Just two months ago, Capetonians were preparing for the dreaded #DayZero. Panic engulfed more than four million people accross the city, and let's not forget dominated conversations accross South Africa and headlines the world over.

Originally set for April, a faint light of hope hovered above the horizon when it was pushed back a month at a time.

Indeed, it resulted in the wings of 'water-wise knowledge' spreading over thousands of people who were lacking knowledge at the fact of water being a vital resource in limited quantity.

But was #DayZero true or was it just a bluff?

On Thursday this week, NFP MP Ahmed Shaik Emam raised an allegation that 'DA created #DayZero to award irregular tenders'. He says it was to secure a R6 billion contract to the Israeli government.

These allegations are extremely important and need urgent investigation. But really, there is a water crisis either way which needs as much attention.

Whether or not these allegations are true, water needs to be saved. It can not be that parties seek to capitalise on a such dire situation.

I'm not down-playing the serious allegations. All I may suggest is that let the allegations be investigated. In the mean time, let the citizens continue there excellent job at reducing water usage, without being put off by the allegations.
