The story: An internal probe into the murder of Anti-Gang Unit detective Charl Kinnear - and why a chilling warning that his life was in danger three weeks before he was slain went unheeded - has drawn back the veil on crippling factionalism within the uppermost ranks of the police.

How we know: A secret summation of the inward-looking investigation, authored by Deputy National Commissioner Francinah Vuma and obtained by News24, found that police management in the Western Cape was so riven by opposing camps that external conflict resolution experts be brought in to stay the implosion.
