The story: To all intents and purposes Antoanette du Preez was kind and caring, helping the city’s marginalised communities when they were at their most desperate and vulnerable. Little did they know she was taking advantage of them, siphoning off the money they gave her for government healthcare expenses to fund a lavish lifestyle that included foreign holidays, expensive cosmetic procedures and plenty of rich family toys.

What happened: Antoanette, who moved from South Africa to Christchurch in New Zealand with her husband Hennie and their two daughters 17 years ago, got away with her double life for years – but it eventually caught up with her.

The sentence: Now the 52-year-old woman is in jail, serving a three-year sentence for stealing NZ$1 million (R10m) from the New Zealand government.
