The story: The year 2020 has surely proven to be one of the toughest on a global scale, ever since the Covid-19 pandemic took the spotlight on the world stage. And it reflected in South Africans' Google search bars.

How we know: This year, South Africans took to Google to find out how to make their own sanitiser at home and tried to keep up to date with President Cyril Ramaphosa's "family meetings", as they later became known.

What else: However, the coronavirus pandemic dominated the searches, with questions surrounding the cigarette ban during the nationwide lockdown, as well as various virus-related questions - such as symptoms and isolation advice.
