The story: India has not only helped South Africa by making available 1.5 million initial doses of Covid-19 vaccines for purchase to this country, it has scored a major foreign policy goal as well.

The background: Leaders in this country have been driving the revival of IBSA, a Global South group comprising itself, Brazil and South Africa, formed in 2003.

A closer look: A South African government official said one of the reasons why India agreed to South Africa securing the initial batch of vaccines from the Serum Institute of India, as well as a further 20 million doses in future, was because it wanted to see a revival of IBSA.
