The story: The ANC's lekgotla this weekend is expected to discuss National Treasury's proposal of a possible tax hike to fund the Covid-19 vaccine amid an already strained public purse.
A closer look: Some party leaders have expressed opposition to the suggestion, describing any attempt at further taxation as "ridiculous" and a move that could lead to a tipping point in public support for the party.
Official comment: "...The money that was already invested in the [vaccine] programme is enough, rather than increasing taxes. It's ridiculous. Tax in this country is already too high. It's too much. You are overburdening the people. You are now suffocating the people. It does not affect certain people who earn millions. You charge everybody across the board, even those who are at a lower level," said NEC member Dakota Legoete.
