Years before Carel Nel would get the role of Abraham Lincoln, his mother noticed his resemblance to the 16th president of the United States. Her words that rang in his head when he auditioned for the character for the documentary series, Grant.
The three-part miniseries, directed by Malcolm Venville and executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, chronicles the life of Ulysses S Grant, the 18th president of the United States.
Carel is no stranger to playing historical figures. In the 2017 film Hartsog he played Professor Christiaan Barnard which, he says, prepared him for this role.
