Zambia's first president after independence and one of the last of a generation of African liberation leaders, Kenneth Kaunda, has died.

Kaunda's son Kambarage Kaunda announced the 97-year-old's death on the former president's official Facebook page.

"I am sad to inform we have lost Mzee. Let’s pray for him," he posted.
