The National Prosecuting Authority's Nulane trial will be a litmus test for if and how law enforcement can effectively tackle alleged state capture criminality – and, Karyn Maughan writes, it will also show the strength of the case against Atul and Rajesh Gupta.

As alleged state capture masterminds Atul and Rajesh Gupta remain behind bars in Dubai, the trial that could result in them facing extradition and prosecution in South Africa has started in the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein.

Given that Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has found that the Guptas benefitted from at least R15.5 billion in irregular contracts, the R24.9 million Nulane Investments contract at the heart of this first-ever state capture trial may seem like a tiny drop in the ocean of alleged corruption.
