As the death toll from the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday climbs to more than 11 000, reports have emerged that government-led forces bombed rebel-controlled areas barely hours after the natural disaster.
Syria is already facing multiple crises, with civil war from 2011, barely any infrastructure left, water and food shortages, the spread of Covid-19, a cholera outbreak and, now, an earthquake.
In the northwest of the country – held mostly by rebels – the earthquake has affected humanitarian and aid routes, with Human Rights Watch describing the situation as "a disaster on so many different levels and on such huge proportions".
