The Zoom interview with Professor Vikram Patel took place a few days after the University of Stellenbosch (US) awarded him an honorary doctorate. He was in the Sabie Sands game reserve and found the time to talk before leaving on a late afternoon game drive.
The first thing one notices about his appearance are his large, dark-brown eyes, radiating compassion and warmth (and sometimes amusement), and his elegant hands with long fingers, which he holds out in front of him as if to help him accentuate something or to express his enthusiasm or seriousness.
