The election of Johannesburg's new 1% mayor revealed much more about the larger parties and how they could behave after the 2024 watershed election, writes Adriaan Basson.

The new executive mayor of Johannesburg, who oversees a budget of R70 billion that caters for five million people, is a former EFF student leader who believes polygamy will lead to a more "stable" society.

The 40-year-old Thapelo Abubakr Amad, one of Muslim party Al Jama-ah's three councillors in the Johannesburg city council, was probably more surprised than anyone else when the ANC and EFF voted for him to succeed the DA's Mpho Phalatse as the city's first citizen on Friday.
