Even if the DA and supporting civil society organisations win their legal challenge to Nersa’s decision, Ebrahim Harvey doubts that it will trigger anything resembling the cataclysmic Arab Spring of the early 2000s.

The South African socioeconomic crisis has been brewing for a long time, but none like what has been happening since the start of the new year, when the unprecedented electricity load shedding crisis we suffered last year not only continued but escalated to Stage 6.

The poorest black people have suffered most from this crisis, simply because we currently have the worst joblessness, poverty and social inequalities ever, which also prevents them from exploring various renewable alternatives to the crisis-ridden and very unreliable and unstable electricity Eskom provides, such as generators, solar panels and battery inverters.
