South Africa's 2022 has started – symbolically at least – with examples of the best that the country can offer – but unfortunately, also the worst.

The deference paid to the passing of Archbishop Desmond Tutu for his brave role in the liberation struggle and as a historic and contemporary moral compass was rapidly followed by the devastating fire at the National Assembly building in Cape Town, which epitomised a broader devastation of the capacity of the state to protect its infrastructure (and citizens).
