South Africa is like Mexico, a country where the state and the mafia are often entwined and where assassinations are a regular occurrence. Every day that this situation is left unaddressed, the mafias become more and more institutionalised in the state and the police, writes Imraan Buccus.

South Africans learnt, with horror, the news that outgoing Eskom CEO André de Ruyter and University of Fort Hare vice-chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu both recently survived assassination attempts.
