The leadership crisis at the helm of the police is untenable, writes Mandy Wiener. Either Bheki Cele or Khehla Sitole must go, or both if President Cyril Ramaphosa is to restore confidence and control in the SAPS. 

Police Minister Bheki Cele has been employing all of his political nous and street smarts as he fights for his survival. Without hesitation, he has repeatedly thrown his National Commissioner into the line of fire. Now he is crying conspiracy. 

On Monday, during the State of the Nation debate, Cele deviated from his prepared speech to make the shock claim that EFF leader Julius Malema tried to hatch a plot with commissioner Khehla Sitole to have him removed from his position.
