It's been years now since the government began promising to create jobs. It has failed.
With unemployment remaining stubbornly high, the government has over the years been injecting a lot of social security expenditure to alleviate poverty. And it has now begun to celebrate this as an achievement – as if the poor don't deserve the dignity that comes with a job. While social grants have mitigated extreme poverty, they have limits, especially when the cost of living rises.
