Three Eskom-related constraints now face the government, making it nearly impossible for it to continue promising to create jobs and expand social grants, writes Mpumelelo Mkhabela.
It's been years now since the government began promising to create jobs. It has failed.
With unemployment remaining stubbornly high, the government has over the years been injecting a lot of social security expenditure to alleviate poverty. And it has now begun to celebrate this as an achievement – as if the poor don't deserve the dignity that comes with a job. While social grants have mitigated extreme poverty, they have limits, especially when the cost of living rises.
