The latest move by the president regrettably is in line with his consistent disregard of the principles of transparency, openness and accountability, writes Serjeant at the Bar.

As expected, acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has requested yet another extension in order to complete his report. Tolstoy took some six years to complete the final version of War and Peace, so even with a fresh extension, Justice Zondo will come in well ahead of that schedule.

It is, however, the contents of President Cyril Ramaphosa's answering affidavit that is cause for concern. He is seeking a period of four months after delivery of the report before he must release it to the public. That means that the public will not have access to this crucial report before July 2022 at the earliest.
