Our Constitution requires the State not only to respect our rights, but also to protect, promote and fulfil them. Ben Winks writes that in lights of this, government is not only entitled, but obliged to take active steps to contain and eradicate Covid-19, which includes implementing a policy of compulsory vaccination.

Last Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that his government is now taking steps towards "introducing measures that make [Covid-19] vaccination a condition for access to workplaces, public events, public transport and public establishments".

Despite the overwhelming evidence that the freely-available Covid-19 vaccines are safe and effective in significantly reducing the risk of infection, severe illness and death, South Africa suffers from alarming levels of hesitancy and apathy toward taking the jab.
