Dr Corné Mulder recently visited Denmark on a coalition study tour. He writes that Denmark has a long tradition of coalition governments and while it is vastly different to South Africa, there are very important lessons we can learn from it.
In about 20 months from now, South Africa will be waiting for the results of the 2024 elections.
Coalitions are here to stay. Currently, we have coalition governments in six of the eight metros. It is possible that we may have a coalition government on a national level, as well as in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, after the 2024 elections. But before that, we need to learn lessons from other countries, like Denmark, and form our own local experience recently.
