Dan Diker and Yechiel M Leiter argue that the latest round of violence between Israel and Gaza was not triggered by tensions at Al Aqsa mosque or in East Jerusalem, but rather it was created by Hamas as they push their Fatah-Palestinian Authority rivals off centre stage.

Rarely can singular reasoning explain the machinations of international politics and warfare, and the current faceoff between Hamas and Israel is no different. The current Hamas-Israel "conflict" has misled governments, diplomats, and news outlets.

In fact, a confluence of factors has encouraged Hamas to launch this latest round of rocket missile and drone attacks on Israeli civilians. Western media and commentators here require correction and context. The Hamas attacks were not triggered by tensions on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, otherwise known to Muslims as Haram el Sharif, or ownership title to apartments in East Jerusalem, which is being pitched by the mainstream media ad nauseam.
