South African municipalities are failing at service delivery. Parliamentary journalist Jan Gerber explains why this is so, and what you should do about it.

How difficult is it to fix a pothole? We live in a world where the multibillion-dollar oil industry can distribute their product around the world; why can't we get every household in the country potable water - a necessity to sustain life and an essential human right? Removing refuse surely isn't rocket science, is it?

While delivering basic services is rather, well, basic, the evidence is clear that many South African municipalities struggle to fulfil some of the simplest tasks.
