The year 2022 is going to be difficult for South African households because of rising costs, failing infrastructure, deepening unemployment, and an absent government due to the inability of the president to act as a result of the looming ANC electoral conference in December, writes Lumkile Mondi.

South Africans would be forgiven for entering the year 2022 with a lot of optimism.

That optimism had been driven by a belief that the worst period had passed. This included two years of a closed economy because of the Covid-19 pandemic and nine years of economic mismanagement by the ANC-led government headed by Jacob Zuma.
