Trust and credibility are the currency of journalism and if this is broken, as in the case of the Tembisa 10 saga, it results in unwarranted attacks on the media, writes Themba Sepotokele.

In 2003, Jayson Blair, a young reporter with a bright future in journalism, was forced to resign from the iconic New York Times following a massive fabrication and grand scale plagiarism scandal.

This embarrassing episode compelled one of the US's oldest and most credible newspapers to do an introspection on how such lapses had happened for an almost two-year period without being picked up. It was only discovered following a complaint from the obscure San Antonio Express News in Texas that Blair had plagiarised one of its stories.
