The link between the rise in assassinations and the idea of a mafia state are interlocked. By evaluating law enforcement organisations and organised crime South Africa is a step closer towards the conditions necessary for a mafia state, writes Theodore Petrus.

The number of assassinations in South Africa, whether attempted or otherwise, does prompt the following questions: First, whether we are now in a mafia state, especially since it seems that assassination is the go-to strategy to get rid of opponents, rivals or threats; and second, is the apparent increase in assassinations a reflection of the state of our law enforcement?
