When yellow, orange and red skies slowly give way to a sinking sun, a nip in the air, and thankfully, the closing of laptops… it’s time for sundowners! This sweet time of day is set aside to quickly freshen up and awaken your other senses with a refreshing drink with friends and peers. What was borrowed from the British tradition has become a quintessential South African pursuit, because we are lucky enough to live in a climate that lends itself to an afternoon beverage outdoors, even in the thick of winter.
Here are three of our "best for sundowner" picks offering the best views for that time of day reserved for relaxing, unwinding and debriefing. It's not just about the views, it’s also about the vibe, and of course, a Happy Hour with your favourite rum never hurt anyone. Clink clink.
FANCY AND FRIVOLOUS | DANTÉ THE RESTAURANT
The brainchild of twin brothers Andile and Ayanda Ngidi, and Trent Varejes, Dante is one of Durban's newest additions which opened up last year following the closure of Ile Maurice in the same location. With views of the Umhlanga promenade, and open from Tuesday to Sunday, the venue is "a place to dine, drink and discover, where all are welcome to experience and indulge". It's a colourful cacophony of modern interiors and quirky furniture set against local artistry, artwork and dramatic wallpaper. Guests can explore and enjoy its extensive winelist, and a selection of inventive cocktails, at the rooftop bar overlooking gorgeous views of the Indian Ocean. The three-storey venue also offers a cigar bar, gin garden, oyster and champagne bar and private dining area. Perfect for a gin or rum-inspired cocktail.
MIAMI MEETS BALI | CABO BEACH CLUB
The recently opened Cabo beach club occupies the former Shimmy Beach Club venue, which is surrounded by the V&A Waterfront, arguably one of Cape Town’s most sought-after locations. Take in views of the Atlantic Ocean as you sip on your tipple of choice from the daybeds, poolside, or on the deck at Caviar, the venue’s Champagne bar. The club has taken inspiration from the sea and sea life and carefully decorated the space for ultimate relaxation and oceanside aesthetic appeal. Complement your beverage with sushi and oysters on the rooftop, wood-fired pizzas and burgers from the beach club menu, or take things up a notch at the upmarket eatery, Violet, a fine-dining menu curated by Salsify’s head chef Ryan Cole.
BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY | CRAFTERS VIEW ROOFTOP BAR
Come rain or shine, Crafters View Rooftop Bar, with its enclosed cocktail bar will have you feeling like you’re on top of the world – if you can brave the steep ascent, that is. Perched on the Factory on Grant, Norwood’s bespoke retail centre, you can enjoy your sundowners with uninterrupted, 360-degree views of Johannesburg, and maybe a live music performance, if you’ve picked the right night. From snifters to shooters and cocktails, this lesser-known spot serves small plates and bar snacks daily from 12pm to 10pm.
