Whether you’re looking for a new car or ready to purchase your first home, one of the most important things you need to take into consideration is finding an insurer that will protect your assets and give you great value for money.

There are a variety of different insurance products out there and navigating through them can get confusing in the process of getting a home or a car. The best way to cover these assets is through short-term insurance.

What is short-term insurance?

Short-term insurance is designed to protect your assets, such as a car or home, against certain insured events such as vehicle accidents, car theft, hijacking, or fire, storm or water damage.

What does it cover?

Santam, one of the largest short-term insurers in South Africa, lists the following as the most common types of personal short-term insurance policies.

  • Vehicle cover

  • Property cover

  • Household cover

  • Personal liability

  • All-risks cover

Insuring your vehicle

According to the South African Insurance Sentiment Index 2022, which offers insight into online consumer sentiment toward 15 major insurers, car insurance made up the largest volume of conversation - 53.3% - across the insurance industry for the second year in a row. This speaks to people’s continued interest in talking about and finding the best insurance for their vehicles.

And when it comes to finding the right insurance for your car, Santam’s 2020/2021 Insurance Barometer report found 46% of consumers surveyed were interested in discounted motor vehicle premiums based on less frequent driving.

Insuring your home and buildings

The best way to protect your home and properties through building insurance is to make sure that you are not underinsured. According to statistics on claims from Santam, one out of three homes in South Africa are underinsured. Santam’s building replacement calculator tool is a free and easy-to-use online tool to help you value your property to see how much building insurance you might need.

While building insurance makes sure that the structure of your home is protected in the event of any damage, home content insurance protects what is inside your home. This includes your clothes, furniture, TV, jewellery, and kitchenware that might be stolen or damaged in a fire. It is important to do an asset inventory to get a better understanding of what your items are worth in total.

Santam offers you great insurance deals on both of these assets without compromising on value. This is why they have been named among the top insurers in South Africa in the South African Customer Satisfaction Index (SAcsi) for three consecutive years.

If you are looking for a short-term insurer that looks for reasons to pay you, rather than reasons not to, visit Santam HERE or call 0860 444 444 or your intermediary to request a quote.
