The ANC's failure to utilise its access to different levers of power to ensure changes in labour laws, particular mining policies, has been cited as being partly to blame for the gang rape, allegedly by illegal miners, of eight women.

Speaking to News24 on Wednesday, political analyst Ralph Mathekga accused the ANC of being disingenuous in its newfound criticism of zama zamas (illegal miners).

The party's new stance was on full display on Wednesday, when it embarked on a protest against illegal immigration and gender-based violence as more than 80 zama zamas appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court.
