The Hawks are not captured, but "unconfirmed, isolated reports" are being addressed, Police Minister Bheki Cele said in a parliamentary reply, amid concerns about organised crime's foothold in the police and its impact on South Africa's economy.
In a written parliamentary question, IFP MP Zandile Majozi stated that organised crime was "rapidly emerging as the biggest threat" to South Africa's economy and that "organisations such as the elite crime-fighting group, the Hawks, have also fallen victim to state capture with no skilled workers".
She asked what Cele's plans were to recruit "top quality investigators who can turn the tide against organised crime".
