Parliament should have "protected" Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane from being suspended by President Cyril Ramaphosa and shouldn't use the slew of damning court rulings against her to determine whether she should be removed from office.
This was the testimony of Zambian Ombudsman Caroline Zulu-Sokoni, as led by Mkhwebane's lawyer, advocate Dali Mpofu SC, on Monday when Mkhwebane's impeachment hearing resumed after being adjourned in December.
Zulu-Sokoni suggested that "what has been going on here in South Africa" could have a chilling effect on the independence of ombudsman institutions on the continent. This on a day when the words "protection", "independence", "autonomy" and even "immunity" were used often in relation to the Office of the Public Protector, but the word "accountability" not so much.
