One of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s chief lieutenants has argued that just because Paul Mashatile is ANC deputy president, it does not automatically qualify him to become second in command of the country.
Incumbent Deputy President David Mabuza had already publicly indicated that he wanted to resign, but following meetings with Ramaphosa was asked to delay his exit from the national executive.
On Monday, Mashatile, former KwaZulu-Natal premier Sihle Zikalala, former Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau, and ANC second deputy secretary-general Maropene Ramokgopa were sworn in as MPs.
