South Africa's permanent mission to the UN is forking out nearly R2.7 million per month for office space - about two years after the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) blew R118 million on a vacant piece of prime land that didn't exist.

Dirco paid an upfront fee for the land, which was meant for office space and accommodation for two missions - the Permanent Mission of South Africa to the UN and the country's consulate general in New York.

The missions have since been accommodated at the British consulate general building in New York.
