ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe believes political parties who parachuted the DA into governance in the City of Johannesburg did so because of a desire to be closer to "whiteness".

"Many of these parties support the DA. I don't know if you know [understand] Sotho? Sehlare sa Motho o montsho ke lekgowa... meaning that your herb (medicine) as a black person is a white man, that is why they supported the DA. It was not the biggest bloc in any of those metros, but it controlled the governments," he told News24.

Mantashe's comments come on the back of the DA's ousting in the City of Joburg this week, after which Mpho Phalatse had to vacate her position as mayor.
