Zweli Mkhize is acting swiftly in his attempt to become the next ANC president after he was endorsed by the party's most influential region in KwaZulu-Natal.

Emboldened by backing from the ANC's eThekwini region, Mkhize's campaign team is banking on support from the entire party in the province.

Now, enjoying considerable sway, Mkhize's camp is trying to persuade KwaZulu-Natal – the party's biggest province in terms of voting power at the ANC's elective conference in December – to dump Mdumiseni Ntuli for the powerful secretary-general post.
