The right to protest is not a "ticket for anarchy", according to President Cyril Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, as the EFF remains defiant in going ahead with its national shutdown, despite court orders and a mass deployment of law enforcement agencies.
The EFF's planned protest – a call for Ramaphosa's resignation and an end to load shedding – has brought into sharp relief the right to protest versus the rights of those not protesting.
"Individuals have been going around different parts of the country, inappropriately and illegally, instructing businesses to remain closed for [Monday] under the guise of the so-called shutdown," says Magwenya.
