"Since 04:00, people barricaded roads and have been stopping commuters from going to work and stopping children from going to school," said Randfontein police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst.

"Tyres are also being burnt ...Right now 08:30 around 1 500 people are entering Randfontein."

She said the group had applied on Tuesday for a peaceful service delivery protest and it was granted for 09:00 to 15:00.

"But they started at 04:00," she said.

Police were on scene, and no arrests had been made yet.
