A lack of prior planning by government, a breakdown in communication, and a chaotic scheduling system seemingly resulted in thousands of health workers across the country – mainly in Gauteng and the Western Cape – having to endure hours-long waiting times before receiving a vaccine, or simply being turned away.
Experts have warned that the country needs to use all 80 000 vaccines in two weeks or vaccinations might go on for the next five years, adding that a lack of planning on behalf of government saw some vaccination sites descending into chaos on Sunday.
Scenes at vaccination sites like Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria and Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town were dubbed potential super-spreader events over the weekend as healthcare workers flocked in numbers to receive the Johnson & Johnson jab.
