A Crime Intelligence officer has, according to high-level police sources, filed an application for a subpoena to access the phone records of News24 investigative journalist Jeff Wicks, prompting the publication to approach the police to immediately clarify the situation.

In March this year News24, through its lawyers Willem de Klerk Attorneys, wrote to the police following a tip-off Wicks' communications were being clandestinely intercepted.

Then-acting Crime Intelligence commander Major-General Feroz Khan, at the time, did not confirm or deny the investigation and would only say no illegal operation was underway.
