The suspension of Crime Intelligence (CI) boss Peter Jacobs, and five officers under his command, is yet another forced changing of the guard at the division, one beleaguered by wave-upon-wave of scandal and upheaval.
The unit faces serious misconduct charges advanced by Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole, relating to allegations that nearly R1.5m from the Secret Services Account – also known as the slush fund – were used to purchase Covid-19 PPE in contravention of police spending directives.
While the suspensions of the six have rocked the division, another PPE scandal faces the police, with the Hawks investigating allegations that a R540 million splurge split between four was tainted by abused emergency procurement procedures.
