"380k please."

That was the simple request France Hlakudi, a senior contracts manager at Eskom, sent to the paymaster of Babinatlou Business Services, a vehicle into which contractors working on the Kusile Power Station paid millions of rands in alleged kickbacks on 2 August 2016.

The money he requested was to pay for a new Volkswagen Polo GTI for Mildred Nyoka, another contracts manager working in Eskom’s group capital division, seemingly a den of corruption, irregularities and self-enrichment.
