A probe by the intelligence watchdog into a dubious R1.1-million Covid-19 PPE splurge by the police’s Crime Intelligence Division has revealed plans to use a slush fund - meant to fund covert operations necessary for the country's security - to bankroll a R15-million spending spree on masks, gloves, and sanitisers.  

Last year, News24 was first to report that companies controlled by active and former cops had scored big in the procurement scandal, which saw the suspension of former CI boss Peter Jacobs and five high-ranking officers under his command, while facing misconduct charges.
