The dubious Covid-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) procurement scandal – the bedrock of a leadership purge in the police’s Crime Intelligence (CI) Division – saw more than R1.1 million channelled from a shadowy police slush fund to companies controlled by former cops.
Crime Intelligence boss Peter Jacobs, along with five high-ranking officers under his command, have been suspended while facing misconduct charges after the Secret Services Account – the R500 million slush fund meant to bankroll covert operations – was used to pay for the PPE “splurge”.
