Career diplomats are threatening to take Parliament to court, arguing MPs have passed a law that helped the ANC capture the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), and allegedly turning it into the party's fundraising tool by selling ambassadorial posts in return for kickbacks.
Details of how the ANC allegedly captured Dirco are contained in an affidavit filed at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture by Sehloho Moloi, a senior and experienced career diplomat.
In his affidavit, dated 2 February 2021, Moloi laid bare and exposed how the ANC's deployment committee, in violation of the Constitution, allegedly illegally and unlawfully nominated ambassadors, heads of mission, and senior diplomats and then shoved them down the throats of Dirco's minister and the Presidency for ratification.
